Karlie Kloss is a lot of things: a six-foot-two supermodel, a judge on Project Runway, a tech entrepreneur and self-proclaimed “geek,” evidenced by her nonprofit Kode With Klossy, which teaches young girls how to code. One thing she’s not? Someone who gets a lot of sleep. Nothing a little concealer can’t cover up, as she proves here for Vogue’s Beauty Secrets. “It looks like I slept for 12 hours [last night],” says the newlywed as she applies a lightweight matte foundation to her face, followed by concealer and Estée Lauder’s Double Wear Stay-in-Place Powder. “Maybe this whole week combined, I slept 12 hours.” A good base is just one of the tips and tricks she’s learned from the “many, many, many makeup chairs I’ve sat in since I was 15,” she says.
A good skin-care routine is also a must, especially at night. For Kloss, it begins with a clean face and a 10-minute mask that “makes me look like Iron Woman,” she says. Then, she’s on to a few drainage techniques with her fingers and a rose quartz stone, a circulation-boosting tool used in the ancient practice of gua sha. Next is moisturizer, lip balm, and a little setting spray.
Before applying any product, Kloss tends to her lashes—but not in the way you’d expect. “I keep a teaspoon in my bag at all times,” she says as she places a metal spoon onto her right eyelid and proceeds to pinch her lashes over the rounded edge of the utensil, a tip she learned from renowned makeup artist Pat McGrath. “This is my eyelash trick,” she whispers to the camera.
Now she’s ready for her no-makeup makeup look, hence her love of Estée Lauder’s Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup in Sand. “It’s buildable,” she says as she applies liquid foundation onto her face with a sculpting brush, a no-fuss formula and application process that comes in handy no matter where she is. “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve [reapplied my makeup] in the back of a cab, fresh off an airplane and heading to a meeting. . . . You can just keep adding.” After some blush on her cheeks and pencil on her brows—“It took me a while to embrace my very arched eyebrows,” she says as she brushes them up and out towards her ears, “but now they’re one of my very favorite features”—she draws in a long, black liquid liner with confidence, not perfection. “That’s what cotton buds are for!” she reminds viewers as she evens out her wings. “A cat-eye is a great way to play.”
Finally, she outlines her lips with a pencil that matches her hands-down favorite shade—one that she says looks incredible on all skin tones in every scenario at any time: Estée Lauder’s Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick in Rebellious Rose. “It’s the perfect lip color because it looks good on everyone: my sisters, my friends. . .” And especially, we think, on Kloss herself.
