Los Angeles may be considered the wellness capital of the country, but New York City still has plenty of places to sweat. Between gyms with luxe amenities and instructors with thousands of followers on Instagram, there is something for everyone, including your favorite models and celebrities. Victoria’s Secret Angels flock to Megan Roup’s dance cardio classes (and promptly share on their accounts) while stars such as Jennifer Aniston and Naomi Watts find solace at The Class by Taryn Toomey. When booking your next workout, consider the studios below—all of which boast a crew of famous fans.
Mile High Run Club
Between tourists and the weather, running in New York is no easy feat. Sara Sampaio prefers to take her runs inside with Mile High Run Club, which has three locations (including their latest and most luxurious on the Upper East Side) and classes of all different lengths. MHRC runners can expect to tackle hills and sprints, all at their own pace. Whether you’re training for a race or trying to incorporate more cardio into your regimen, the friendly and knowledgeable instructors are there to help.
Not everyone enjoys boutique studio classes. If you’re looking for a more personal approach to fitness, take a cue from Lais Ribeiro, Romee Strijd, Ashley Graham, and Josephine Skriver. The models frequent Dogpound, a Tribeca gym that uses everything from boxing and bands to incline treadmills in their sweat-inducing workouts. The customized training also comes with nutrition programs—the perfect touch for anyone looking to become their healthiest yet.
The Class by Taryn Toomey
If you’re looking for a class that incorporates traditional moves like jumping jacks with vocal release, then you’ve come to the right place. Taryn Toomey’s crystal-infused Tribeca studio is where you can find stars like Christy Turlington Burns participating in the widely covered phenomenon called The Class. Attendees leave feeling sweaty, sore, and most importantly, restored.
Tracy Anderson Method
The petite blonde’s workout approach has been a longtime favorite of the stars. Her method activates and strengthens small muscles, and delivers undeniable results. Gwyneth Paltrow famously partnered up with Anderson after seeing immediate results with her program. Other fans include Maggie Gyllenhaal, Hilary Rhoda, Jennifer Lopez, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Victoria Beckham. If you can’t squeeze in a class at the flagship studio, her online subscription program will keep you in shape no matter where you are.
The Sculpt Society by Megan Roup
You’ve been living under a rock if you haven’t seen Megan Roup grace your feed. Elsa Hosk, Martha Hunt, and Shanina Shaik have used Roup’s workout, The Sculpt Society, to prep for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, and Lais Ribeiro was paired with the former Brooklyn Nets dancer for the official “Train Like An Angel” video series. The class is divided into portions that include dance cardio, ankle weights, sliders, and light hand weights. Roup does the entire workout along with the class, which can be taken at Studio B, Project by Equinox, and online on Obé.
Devon Windsor, Georgia Fowler, and Sadie Newman can be found training at this exclusive Union Square gym. You must apply for membership at Performix House, but once you’re in, members are paired with one of New York’s most experienced trainers with access to gym equipment, recovery cryotherapy, and infrared sauna sessions. The locker rooms are stocked with luxury products and members of the highest tier can enjoy an assigned locker and laundry service.
One of the OG trainers to the Angels is back on the New York fitness scene with his own namesake studio. Gelband has trained everyone from Candice Swanepoel to Jasmine Tookes, and now offers group classes so any New Yorker can experience his method. In addition to the signature mat Pilates sessions (think micro moves paired with ankle weights and bands), the studio has recently added dance cardio classes to the schedule.
Models Blanca Padilla and Nadine Leopold are fans of P.volve, a science-backed fitness program that is the opposite of HIIT. The low-impact exercises are safe, effective, and won’t leave you in a worse state then when you started. Classes can be taken at the Bowery Street studio or online, where a subscription gives you access to workouts ranging from 15 to 60 minutes.
New York Pilates
You’re guaranteed to be sore after a session at New York Pilates. Models such as Toni Garrn, Cindy Bruna, and Lauren Layne are all fans of the program, which includes classes dubbed “Abs Arms Ass” and “Burnout.” With locations across the city, including their newest two-story flagship in the West Village, you have numerous opportunities to get on the reformer. Who knows? Maybe you’ll plank next to other fans like Ashley Olsen and Jessica Chastain.
