Check Tom Sachs’ Instagram story right now and you’ll find an out of this world announcement. The artist is selling a limited release of the 500 or so original Nasa chairs from his 2012 show titled “Space Program: Mars.” Sachs’s description of the items read as such: “Each 31.25” x 17.25” x 19.25” Samsonite folding chair was used during the launch that took two astronauts to the surface of Mars at the Park Avenue Armory, NY 2012.” The chairs are all signed by the artist and feature their own individual names and serial numbers. The price tag is $1,000 a seat, and they will be available to buy for the next 24 hours only. Once the Instagram story ends, so does the sale. Also stated in the description, they “contain dust from the martian surface and signs of use. No choices. No returns.”
Who would want to return a Tom Sachs original anyway? There’s no doubt that this art world drop will create an astronomical amount of hype on social media. As for those who flocked to the beaches of Art Basel this week in search of similar thrills, don’t be surprised to see them focused on their iPhone screens all day. Sachs certainly knows how to create buzz around his work, and just like his Nike collaboration, this release promises to have supernatural appeal.
