While Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s relationship seemed to materialize suddenly, we now know that that’s not the case: their love had been percolating for months, much of it over text, then spontaneous drinks at the Vanity Fair Oscars party. Now, they’re getting married, and while the nature of their bond still seems surprising to some, others are chalking it up to the stars under which they were born.
While in the West, reading astrology is often little more than a tongue-in-cheek pastime or conversation starter during the early stages of dating, in India it holds a little more weight. Braided into Hindu beliefs, it’s not uncommon for families to consult with an astrologer a few times a year before making life-changing decisions. It’s less about taking astrological advice at face value, and more about identifying auspicious times during the year when important developments are more likely to occur: astrologers claim to have a sense about everything from career moves to romantic love.
Any reading works like this: your birth date, location, and time are added together to formulate a “natal chart” — effectively, a deep dive into your overall life path determined by three signs (your sun, moon, and rising), each of which distinguishes a different aspect of your personality. Compatibility readings then consult the charts of two partners side-by-side, and measure their goals, strengths, and weaknesses against one another’s—all to determine whether or not a pairing is favorable for the long haul.
In some cases, a Hindu family’s approval of a marriage is contingent on the analysis of the reading. It is interesting, then, to consider whether or not Chopra and Jonas, who are having a combined Hindu-Christian wedding, looked into their own. Regardless, we at Vogue sat down with Vedic astrologer Rakesh Kumar and Western astrologer Angel Eyedealism to get the east-west perspective on the couples’ celestial fates. Here, the top takeaways:
They were fated from the start.
Priyanka Chopra is a fiery Cancer whose winning confidence and charm has made her one of the most beloved and powerful women in the Indian film industry. Per Eyedealism (who kindly gave me an exhilarating, two-hour reading on Chopra and Jonas), Chopra is “tough as balls, but also a mush ball, at the end of the day.” She’s looking for intimacy and a true emotional connection, and she takes relationships incredibly seriously, which is a good thing because Jonas does, too. Her new husband, a Virgo, is, just by his sun sign, one of the more compatible matches to Chopra’s Cancer. Like her, he has strong elements of Venus in his chart (to which we owe their associations to art, music, entertainment and, well… good fortune, money-wise). It should also be noted that the two apparently have an intense physical bond, partly attributed to his Mars and her Venus both being in Gemini.
Their preferences for an ideal mate point to… well, each other.
Both Chopra and Jonas have what the other desires to seal the deal. Interestingly, per Kumar, Jonas’s Saturn in his 7th house (partnership) indicates that he will choose an older partner, whom he views as steady and comfortable in her own skin. For Priyanka’s part, her Sagittarius element suggests that she will choose a partner from a different cultural background than hers.
