“I went on my first date like last year,” laughs 23-year-old Zuri Marley. “Literally, I’m fine with it. I mean, they say you have to kiss a lot of frogs, but you don’t really.”
As you’ll soon learn, or might know already, nobody keeps it more real than Marley, a rising singer (she’s featured on Blood Orange’s new album Negro Swan) and DJ who also happens to be the daughter of Ziggy and the granddaughter of Bob. Ahead of Valentine’s Day, she takes us through her glowing skin and sultry makeup routine for the big night—and telling it like it is while she’s at it.
“As you guys can see, I have some acne scars and hyperpigmentation from puberty,” says Marley. “We just can’t help it. This is life!” After supercharging her skin with a golden sheet mask, glow-igniting serum, and Biossance’s Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil (“I’ve never been afraid of oils even though I have acne-prone skin!” says Marley), she uses Dior Addict Lip Sugar Scrub to buff her mouth smooth and swipes on Glossier’s Balm Dotcom. “I’m kind of a lip balm addict,” she confesses. “I keep like four on me. It’s crazy.”
On to makeup, Marley pays special attention to enhancing her complexion. “For me, it takes the most time, because I have a lot of covering to do,” she explains, mixing together different shades of foundation before buffing it into her face. “If you really want to get rid of your hyperpigmentation, there are a lot of things you can do—lasers, peels, and stuff. But makeup is an amazing alternative. It’s a temporary fix [that] allows me a lot more freedom.” Her base nearly complete, Marley goes in with NARS’s Radiant Creamy Concealer on the under eyes and contours the hollows of her cheeks before using a powder foundation to seal everything in. Filling in her brows with feather-light strokes of Anastasia Beverly Hills’s Brow Wiz, she moves on to her favorite step of all: blush.
“It just makes me feel so romantic,” she says, unabashedly swirling MAC’s Powder Blush in Breath of Plum on the apples of her cheeks. “Yes, I put on a lot. I love blush. I can’t help it!” After contouring along the eye socket and dabbing on a wash of iridescent moss green shadow, she turns to the lips, which she lines precisely before adding lipstick. With every intention of playing up the glow of date night candlelight, she strobes the high planes of her face with Milk Makeup’s Face Gloss and adds a slick of Fenty Beauty’s Gloss Bomb in Diamond Milk. She takes down her platinum curls and voilà! She’s ready for wherever the evening takes her. “I like a date that’s an adventure, so that’s what I’m getting ready for,” she says with a glint in her eye.
